Non Finito, chapter three

In Development

In Development is a series of 18 film photographs, their negatives, a digital darkroom, and the prints it develops. True to the "non finito" tradition, the series focuses on process, incompleteness and imperfection, and is here reinterpreted through the lens of analogue photography and onchain systems. 18 one-of-ones, inscribed on black uncommon sats.

18 film photographs, inscribed as negatives.

Shot on film, these photographs depict construction sites, machinery, cranes, scaffolding, urban spaces themselves in development, curated from hundreds of shots I took over the years.

parent → childrecursion

Each negative is inscribed on a black uncommon sat: the last satoshi of a Bitcoin block.

The artwork is then reinscribed on the same sat. Collecting a piece means receiving both the onchain negative and the printing html.

The printing html, the negatives, the darkroom engine and the libraries used are all connected through recursion. Provenance is achieved using parent-child inscriptions.

Developed

For the last six to eight months, I worked on building a darkroom engine that purposely produces what would usually be considered failed prints.

Development, chemicals, papers, enlarger settings, alt processes, temperatures: everything counts when chemistry and physics interact with each other.

The printing process happens onchain, modelled after real life data and my own observations. Custom controls let anyone reroll and play with the settings and a log shows the current "recipe".

    Unfinished

Through the non finito lens, the unfinished, imperfect aesthetic is precisely the point.

Every refresh or reroll develops a new print from scratch, never the same twice.

Collectors can archive any print recipe. 'Archive this log' saves the current log as a small HTML note, which can be inscribed as a child of the artwork for it to appear in the Log book. From there, new prints using the same recipe can be developed again.

Viewers can also save any print as PNG, at 1440 × 2556 (1:1) or 2880 × 5112 (2:1). From onchain systems to log archives to individual prints.

Non Finito: I, Non Finito (The Builder); II, Underpainting and Underdrawing; III, In Development.

Non Finito is a series of works that are deliberately unfinished.

    I. Chapter one was a nod to the origins of non finito in sculpture, and explored digital rendering processes. The figure emerging from stone and pixel blur was a metaphor for what being a builder means today.

II. The second chapter revealed the preparatory steps of two paintings, interrupted in their making. It dove deeper into algorithmic systems, and invited viewers to participate in the act of creation.

III. In Development bridges film photography and algorithmic art and places viewers in the darkroom. It sees development as a conceptual process as much as it is a technical one, and questions our relation to imperfection and incompleteness and the collector's role in the curation process.
